Managing The Business Of Technology

Barry Henderson MIMC CMC

How can business leaders who are not technologists or who have not maintained currency in their technical discipline make appropriate decisions, build competency in new technologies and avoid costly mistakes?

Technology does not only provide opportunities – there are also threats. Creating value from technology is a critical challenge for the business leader, yet often investments in new product, process of information technologies, have not met the expectations of improved performance to the organisation's bottom line.  Substantial writedowns, the result of an inappropriate selection of technologies to grow the business, are a significant cost to business.

Technology, from a leadership perspective, has to be a key strategic resource for building the organisation’s competitive advantage.

A review of many business planning texts and workbooks reveals that technology rarely rates a mention other than as facilities and equipment linked with production processes, quality and manufacturing standards, or occupational health and safety issues. Strategic technology management represents a fundamental shift in the way technology is perceived and incorporated within the business.

However, many managers are reluctant to address the effective use of technology as they believe, incorrectly, that they must have expertise in technical disciplines to manage technology effectively.

Managers must understand the potential that technology holds for generating business efficiencies and opportunity.  Developing new organisational structures, new management styles and new approaches to harness technology and innovation, along with understanding the impact technology has on the marketplace are senior management tasks.

The challenge for business leaders is to build responsive and adaptive organisations in a tough, technologically challenging world where technology is constantly reshaping the way organisations undertake business.

Barry Henderson and his team at Innovation & Business Development work with senior management to identify and adopt specific approaches to implement the management of technology - both as a technical activity and as a strategic business resource.
